“With the month of May in full swing, so is Pet Cancer Awareness Month.”[1] Unfortunately many animals, especially elderly ones sometimes develop cancer and it is quite a common disease in pets.

This month is all about drawing awareness to the fact that our pets can fall victim to this disease, and to the main symptoms to watch out for. Because they are unable to tell us if they are in pain, it is important to check for any signs of illness or cancer. The best way to do this is with regular vet check-ups and if cancer is suspected, to opt for a more detailed exam. Then a suitable treatment plan can be selected from the various options such as chemotherapy, radiation or surgery.[2] It has been said that pets react well to these treatments and can make a full recovery. Vets recommend bringing your pet for an exam at least once a year to check for any health issues, including cancer.

“The Veterinary Cancer Society suggests checking your pet regularly for signs such as swollen lymph nodes, sudden weight loss, enlarged lumps, vomiting, diarrhea, and lameness. If your pet displays any of these warning signs, consult with your veterinarian as soon as you can.”[3] Once a diagnosis has been made, the Vet Cancer Society can help by providing information and support to pet owners dealing with this disease. You can find more information here on their website. They have a large array of information and useful links for pet owners.

Just like in humans, early detection and treatment is an important factor in curing this disease which is why bringing your pet for a check-up is so important.

According to google, National Pet Cancer Awareness Month was started in 2005 by Nationwide® and the Animal Cancer Foundation™ to increase awareness and to raise funds to help combat the leading killer in pets. Please help to bring awareness to this cause by speaking to friends and family who are pet owners, especially of elderly pets to make sure all animals get the attention they need.
